Support the UK citizens in having a real debate on Brexit
I am asking the BBC and ITV to rethink their plans for a May vs. Corbyn debate on Brexit.
The Ofcom Broadcasting Code emphasises the need for “due impartiality” and “an appropriately wide range of significant views must be included and given due weight” in such proposed programmes.
This just won’t be possible in a head-to-head debate between Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May without a Liberal Democrat representative.
Only the Liberal Democrats have been leading from the front for the past two years and demanding a vote on the Brexit deal, with the public being given an option to remain in the EU – a distinctive view that is not represented by the Prime Minister or the Leader of the Opposition.
Instead, the BBC and ITV are proposing to give them a platform that would see two party leader's with strikingly similar views engage in an entirely superficial 'debate'.
My own view on Brexit, shared by the Liberal Democrats, must be represented in these debates and that is why I am calling on the BBC and ITV today to do the right thing and include Vince Cable in any debate they host.
