The significance of Science Communication
It is crucial to communicate current research to the public because the rules of the game have changed. In the past, there was an implicit trust towards scientists as they were the ones considered “to know”, to hold knowledge and had the responsibility to do with it as needs must. Today this is no longer the case. Knowledge is accessible everywhere, over the internet, on your smart phones. People challenge those who know, much more. No one goes to the doctor anymore without having checked out his/her symptoms on the internet beforehand. As a consequence funding science is not so obvious any longer and scientists have to demonstrate that what they are researching is necessary. This is complicated because it leads to a commercialisation of research. That is why it is crucial that scientists communicate about their research...not so much to justify their salary but to rebuild that rapport of trust with society.
